formidable, 2012
ceramic, acrylic
In Formidable, Francis C. Bonilla explores the tension between movement and stillness, fluidity and rigidity. The organic, undulating forms evoke the sensation of something in motion—caught in the act of shifting—only to be frozen in time. The interplay of warm, earthen tones against deep, inky blacks heightens the contrast, inviting the viewer to contemplate the duality of softness and strength. Formidable challenges perceptions of permanence and change, suggesting that even the most fluid elements can take on an unyielding presence.

#consumed, 2014
Brown Paper, Mixed Media
A towering brown paper bag, stained with an unmistakable hashtag, serves as both an altar and a warning—a reflection of a culture devouring itself. #Consumed examines the media diet of an era in flux: the rise of social media, the evolution of fast food, the intersection of politics and pop culture, the viral nature of memes, and the increasing commodification of health and wellness. Painted vignettes of contemporary events weave through the stain, blurring the line between sustenance and saturation. The work challenges viewers to consider not just what they consume, but how it shapes them—physically, mentally, and socially.
